Alex Goldfarb Missing in Pastore Peak Since Yesterday, Rescue Underway
Dream Wanderlust | Jan 18 , 2021
American-Russian mountaineer, Alex Goldfarb, is reportedly lost since the evening of 16th January. His initial plan was to climb Broad Peak (8047m) with Hungarian climber Zoltan Szlanko. For that, to acclimatise, he pushed for an ascent to Pastore Peak (6209m) and never returned since then.
On January 8th, both the climbers arrived at the Broad Peak Base Camp. Upon an early assessment of the heavily crevassed terrain, Zoltan decided to retreat since the pitch was too difficult to continue, wherein, Alex was determined to proceed further solo.
Asghar Ali Porik, their service provider in the Karakorams, reported that John Snorri, the Icelandic, who was to ascend K2 with Muhammad Ali Sadpara and his son, Sajid, has put his expedition on hold to join the rescue operation with Zoltan. In the morning of 18th January, a helicopter is to be sent to find Goldfarb.
Eight years ago on 5th March, Polish climbers Artur Malek, Adam Bielecki, Maciej Berbeka, and Tomasz Kowalski scaled Broad Peak - first time ever in Winter.
