Alex Txikon and six Sherpas climbed Manaslu this winter
Dream Wanderlust | Jan 7 , 2023
Spanish alpinist Alex Txikon & team reaches the Manaslu summit this winter without using any supplemental oxygen in his third attempt. They adopted a different strategy this time, having devoted a month to acclimatization. To help with the acclimatization process, Alex took part in other projects in the Himalayas.“The third time was the good one. We are very tired but tremendously excited. Although we will reach the true summit when we all return safely to Base Camp”, Txikon messaged from the summit.
Team Reaching Simmt
He reached the Manaslu Base Camp on December 26th and established a Base Camp at 5000m. After tracking the weather updates, they started their journey from Base Camp on January 4. They took the necessary material and went directly up to C2, at about 6,400 meters. “We have done about 1,500 meters of unevenness. The route has been tough due to the wind and all the material we brought”, said the Basque mountaineer.
They took a rest at C2 and quickly ascended to C3 (just below 7,000m) on January 5th. On January 6th after getting favorable weather conditions, he started for the summit along with Pasang Nurbu Sherpa, Chhapel Sherpa, Gelu Sherpa, Maila Sherpa, Mantere Lama Sherpa, and Gamje Babu Sherpa, and at 9:30 (local time) had ascended the eighth highest mountain in the world. This feat was achieved without the help of artificial oxygen and in the middle of winter, something is never done before.
