Polish mountaineer and mountain runner Andrzej Bargiel (30), has become the first person to Ski down K2 (8611m), the second tallest mountain in the world. He summited K2 on today morning at 11:30am and reached the Base Camp at around 7:30pm local time.
Previously he along with his Polish mate Janusz Golab had abandoned their expedition on Gasherbrum II, which was undertaken as a part of acclimatization for the K2 Ski Challenge.
However, he also skied down Shishapangma and Broad Peak in 2013 and 2015 respectively. He is the current record holder in speed to get Snow Leopard award.
Previously there were some climbers who have tried to Ski K2
1. Italian mountaineer, Hans Kammerlander skied the top 400m of K2 in 2001.
2. Internationally known climber and skier, Dave Watson skied the upper slopes of K2 on 4th August, 2009. Watson skied from an altitude of 8351m (27400ft) down the bottleneck of K2.
3. German extreme mountaineer, Luis Stitzinger skied down Kukuczka Route to BC (5100m) in 2011. Stitzinger skied from an altitude of 7850m.
