Dream Wanderlust | Nov 25 , 2020
Known for his invention of fully-metal ice-axe and rescue stretcher, the Scottish legend Dr. Hamish MacInnes passed away at the age of 90 on Sunday (November 22, 2020). Renowned climber and inventor Dr. MacInnes was born at Gatehouse of Fleet. For the last six decades, his all-metal designs have been adapted by various climbing fraternities and special rescue teams in the armed forces across the globe. Replacing wooden shaft, his new metal axes introduced a newfound durability up above the snowy mountains.
He was the first-ever recipient of the Scottish Award for Excellence in Mountain Culture in 2008 for his contribution as a mountaineer and a legendary inventor. As a founding member of the Glencoe Mountain Rescue Team, he led many operations over the years alongside the Search and Rescue Dog Association. Apart from his rescue missions, Dr. MacInnes voyaged on about two dozens of mountaineering ventures.
