Italian Alpinist Cala Cimenti dies in an Avalanche

Italian alpinist and skier Carlo Alberto Cimenti aka "Cala" (45) died in an avalanche on 8th February, 2021 while skiing in Upper Susa Valley of Piedmont, Italy. He is best known for his ski-descents of the mountains from the summit. His ski partner, Patrick Negro, also died in the accident.

In 2019, Cala managed to ski down from near the summit of Nanga Parbat. He climbed with Pakistani Muhammad Ali Sadpara and Spanish Sergi Mingote. Ali is missing on K2 for the last fews days and Sergi died on 16th January, 2021 while descending from Camp-1 of K2. Cala also summited and skied down from the summit of Gasherbrum VII, few days later after his summit of Nanga. Cala, along with Matthias Koenig and Julian Dänzer summitted Laila Peak (6096m) in the Karakoram range in 2018 and then Cala and Matthias skied down through the North-West Face from the summit. During the same expedition, Cala and Matthias also summitted an adjoined unknown peak (5809m); they named it "Laila's Little Sister" and made the first ever ski-descent from the summit.

Cala Cimenti and Matthias Koenig summitted Dhaulagiri (8167m) in 2017 without supplemental oxygen and skied down from 7200m to 5200m of the mountain.

In 2011, he became the first Italian to make a ski-down from the summit of Manaslu. Cala became the first to ski from the summit of Communism Peak (7495m) in 2015. In 2005, he summited Cho Oyu and in 2010 he soloed Ama Dablam.
