Kami Rita Sherpa (49), the super Sherpa of Nepal, has added a new feather to his cap today again when he stood tall on the summit of Everest (8848m) for 23rd time at 7:50am, climbing from Nepal side. He was reported to be leading an Indian Government-funded expedition, jointly organized by Seven Summit Treks and 14 Peak Expedition. "This is a matter of nation's pride. Climbing the Everest for 23 times successfully is more than the normal imagination", as expressed by Tashi Lakpa Sherpa, the Managing Director of Seven Summit Treks.
Kami reportedly had set out for his final summit push from Camp-4 late at night and reached on to the summit today. Gyanendra Shrestha, Nepali Government official reported all the members of his team are safe and sound and now been descending to the lower camps.
Kami Rita Sherpa on his 23rd summit of Everest
Binod Adhikari, an US-based well-known filmmaker and Tashi Sherpa from Nepal, are all set to produce a documentary on Kami's journey of nearly three-decade-long mountaineering career. This documentary named 'STEP 23' has been filming his life as an accomplished mountaineer at Everest Base Camp since a month and following Kami Rita's trail during the rotational ascents.
Kami, hailing from Thame village in Solukhumbu district in Nepal, climbed Everest in 1994 for the first time. Since then, he has been climbing the mountain almost every year. Last year, he broke the Guinness World Record once he achieved the highest number (22, as of 16th May, 2018) of summits on the tallest mountain on earth. Apa Sherpa (59) and Phurba Tashi Sherpa Mendewa (48), who jointly held the record of 21 summits on Everest, had retired from mountaineering career.
