Dream Wanderlust | May 17 , 2023
Slovakian climber Peter Hámor and his team summited Kabru south (7318m) via a new route on 12th May 2023.
Hamor, Italian couple Nives Meroi and Romano Benet and Bojan Jan of Slovenia summited the peak without any sherpas and camps.
Initially, the weather was turbulent but cleared up later. The team has now returned to the base camp.
"On May 12, 2023, at 16:30 local time, Peter, Nives, Roman (Italy), and Bojan (Slovenia) succeeded in the first ascent of the west wall to the top of Kabru South (7,318m) by a new route, without oxygen, without slings, without markers, without camps. The conditions were challenging, luckily the weather cleared up on the last day and the wind eased," a message posted on Peter's official website.
Previously in 1994, an Indian team led by H.S. Chauhan made the first ascent to Kabru South Kabru North, and Kabru Main. A total of 27 climbers out of 50 members climbed the mountain without any Sherpa assistance.
They climbed Kabru South via North Ridge from East Side.
However, the West Face was attempted once by a Serbian team in 2004 which had to be abandoned at 5650m after the leader, Dragan Jacimovic fell into a crevasse. They finally gave up when they realise the path was too technical and they were short of gear. Kabru South (Courtesy: Peter Hámor's Facebook profile)
