Sergi Mingote (48) is here with a mountaineering challenge to summit 6 of the 14 Eight-thousander in a year!
The growth of technological aid in mountaineering has led to innovative records by aspirational mountaineers. Each year mountaineers come with a daring challenge that blows everybody's mind. This year along with some mind-blowing projects of Spring 2019, Sergi Mingote is self-motivated to reach the summit of Everest, Lhotse, and Kangchenjunga back to back till July 2019. Having bagged K2, and Broad Peak in July, and Manaslu in last September, the success of these 3 highest peaks will make him achieve his Project 3x2x8000er ie. 6 Eight-thousanders in a year. He will be climbing all of these without supplemental oxygen.
Not only that, he is aiming to create two Guinness Book Records,
- Break the current record of climbing 3 of the highest (Everest, K2, Kangchenjunga) by Silvio Mondinelli in three years 74 days. He is trying to complete all three in a year.
- Climbing 6 Eight-thousanders without supplemental oxygen in less than 365 days.
How is he planning to achieve this?
- In July 2018, Sergi summited Broad Peak and K2 in a week.
- In September 2018, he successfully climbed Manaslu.
- This year he will attempt Lhotse first in May 2019. He will then immediately climb Everest, without returning back to Base Camp. He will probably halt at Camp-3 or Camp-2 based on his strength.
- After Everest, he will fly to Kangchenjunga Base Camp. Being already acclimatized on Everest top, he will hopefully summit K3 in lesser days.
- Additionally, he will go home and return back to the Karakoram in August-September to try both the Gasherbrum peaks. With this, he can accomplish 8 of the 14 highest peaks.
Sergi along with his support team have already arrived at the Everest Base Camp. He is sharing his permit with 3 other independent climbers, who are themselves focussing on completing their own projects.
Additional facts about Sergi Mingote
- He is born in Barcelona in 1971. Very early he was attracted to climbing peaks.
- His first major achievement was in 1998 when he summited Cho Oyo.
- Three years after this he climbed Everest via North Side, followed by South Side in 2003.
- Next year he did a winter ascent of Tent Peak (5663m) situated in Annapurna Sanctuary.
- He was part of 'Everest50' expedition, on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay's first historical ascent of Everest in 1953. Coincidentally, being a Catalan, he was also celebrating the 20th anniversary of Catalan climber summiting Everest. Along with 2 other Catalan climbers, they were climbing live for Catalonia TV3. All this was possible when all 3 climbers themselves carried an antenna and a camera to shoot the historic climb. While Sergi was climbing the other 2 were skillfully filming it for the rest of the Europe.
