Winter K2: 4 Sherpas at 7800m, Summit Push Starts Tonight
Dream Wanderlust | Jan 15 , 2021
Even though 2021 began with a heavy disruption at higher camps, four Nepalese Sherpas finally reached Camp-4 (7800m) on K2. Today at 3:30pm, by joining forces, the team of Mingma Gyalje Sherpa, Nirmal 'Nims' Purja, and Seven Summits Treks, made it to 7800m, which, up until now, remains the highest altitude on K2, ever reached in Winter.
Now that the rope is fixed up to Camp-4, is the only 8000er, left to be climbed in Winter, finally to be climbed tomorrow? If so, 33 years after the first attempt on K2 in Winter, the history is, indeed, in making.
Hitherto, it was only by Denis Urubko, Marcin Kaczkan, and Piotr Morawski in Winter 2002-03, that K2 could be attempted until 7560m.
Mingma Gyalje Sherpa confirmed the names of three Mingma's in his team (now at Camp-4) - Mingma 'David' Sherpa, Mingma Tenzi Sherpa, including himself, and Sona Sherpa, representing Seven Summits Treks.
Besides, Chhang Dawa Sherpa confirmed that the rest of the members, waiting at Camp-3, are also to start ascending towards Camp-4 at 1am tonight: Nirmal Purja, Gelje Sherpa, Pem Chhiri Sherpa, Dawa Temba Sherpa, Kili Pemba Sherpa, Dawa Tenjing Sherpa.
